True Run currently publishes three magazines in print and online – the Beijinger, beijingkids and JingKids (Beijing and Shanghai). We are now looking for a full-time Copy Editor to join the Beijinger editorial team.
Job Purpose:
The Copy Editor is responsible for the copy-editing, proofreading and corrections processes of the Beijinger’s products. He/she brings a methodical, systems-based approach to ensuring that any written matter published by the company is clear, correct, concise, complete, and consistent. The Copy Editor serves as a proxy reader – advocating for text that is legible and enticing on the page.
The Copy Editor is also responsible for instilling standards of journalistic professionalism in staff editors by providing critique during planning and editing, and leading educational seminars and on-boarding training for incoming editors.
Responsibilities:
- Copy-edits all first drafts (pre-layout) and blogs with the goal of minimizing errors in published work, increasing readability, and catching plagiarism.
- Reviews all of the magazine in B&W phase with the goal of eliminating headline/caption/cover errors.
- Attends pitch and planning meetings for the Beijinger to provide feedback about how to frame story pitches and headlines that will appeal to and serve the reader.
- Maintains and updates the TRM editorial Style Guide; drafts other SOPs for processes pertaining to the Beijinger as well as the entire Editorial Department. Formats and polishes SOPs of other departments for clarity and consistency.
- Coordinates with Managing Editor to identify the training needs of staff editors and interns; develops editorial workshops and/or personalized tutorials to orient newcomers and keep current staffers aligned with TRM editorial standards.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree with major in English, journalism or related fields
- At least two years of relevant work experience
- At least one year of writing/editing experience
- Fluent English communication skills
- Computer savvy
- Familiar with pagination and design software

- Excellent writing skills
- Meticulous proofreading skills
- Strong fact-checking skills
Bonus points if you have the following:
- Chinese language skills
- Previous media experience (online media more bonus points)
- Previous managerial/supervisory experience
