Creating fun and educational lesson plans? And last but not least, selflessly sharing your knowledge of English while bonding with students? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you might just have a great time as a English teacher with the Futian Volunteers.
We currently host two weekly English Corners in the district, one near Lianhuashan Park (莲花山公园) on Saturdays and one at Bijiashan Park (笔架山公园) on Sundays. Both are currently being run by experienced teachers and you are welcome to help out at either; however, the spot at Lianhuashan will be opening up soon. Responsibilities for each position include...
Lianhuashan Park: 10:00-11:00am, Saturdays
- help create creative and engaging lesson plans for kids
- co-teach, or lead a class (10-15 children, elementary and middle-school age)
Bijiashan Park: 9:30-10:15am/10:15-11:00am, Sundays
- brainstorm lesson ideas for adults, kids, or both (groups of around 5-10 at a time, informal setting)
- assist during activities for kids OR assist and/or lead English conversation for adults
Qualifications: native or near-native English ability, patience (for the kids), enthusiasm. Knowledge of Mandarin not necessary but certainly helpful.
If you're unsure of yourself because you've never taught before, don't be. There will be experienced teachers on hand to help lead class and lesson plan. Also, even though the Lianhuashan teacher will eventually leave her position, she will still be available afterwards to give advice and guidance. The most important thing for applicants, as cheesy as it sounds, is to come in with open minds and hearts.
